INTRODUCTION

In 2002  two well-established port operators, Hessenatie and Noord Natie, pooled their centuries of experience to become one of the leading players in the port of Antwerp. Immediately following the merger, the new company was taken over by PSA International, one of the largest port groups in the world, with headquarters in Singapore.

PSA International participates in port projects across Asia, Europe and the Americas. It is one of the absolute world leaders in container handling. As the operator of the world's largest container terminal in Singapore, and other large-scale projects in locations such as the port of Antwerp, the group currently processes some 170,000 containers per day, which amounted to a total for 2013 of 61.81 million TEU*. The terminal in Singapore accounts for almost half of this volume. The Belgian PSA Antwerp, PSA’s largest investment outside of Singapore, processed 8.57 million TEU* in 2013. PSA Antwerp is referred to as the PSA group’s second flagship.

PSA International aims to assume a prominent role in the ports that are important for international trade. The group’s portfolio is being expanded both through starting up greenfield-projects and through takeovers of existing operators. Naturally, this process involves anticipating new trends and closely following promising new economic development areas.

PSA Antwerp operates 4 container terminals and 1 multipurpose terminal in the port of Antwerp. Three of these are located in front of the locks: the Deurganck, the Noordzee and the Europa Terminal. Two others are located behind the locks: the MSC Home Terminal (50/50% joint venture with MSC) and the Churchill Terminal. Over 80% of the containers that come into Antwerp pass through one of these terminals.

In addition to container handling, PSA Antwerp is also active in general cargo handling. This includes handling of commodities such as iron and steel, wood products and other cargo. In order to further develop these activities, in 2000, PSA set up a joint venture with the Nova Natie group. Together they founded Nova & Hesse-Noord Natie Stevedoring NV (NHS).

All in all, PSA Antwerp can draw upon the experience and expertise of a workforce of approximately 2.600 employees. Thanks to their hard work and motivation, PSA Antwerp is playing a significant part in making the group’s slogan a reality ‘PSA, The World’s Port of Call’.
