Raffinerie Tirlemontoise was founded in 1836 and became part of the Südzucker AG group in 1989. The Raffinerie Tirlemontoise Group (RT Group) is the market leader in Belgium and has several branches dotted around the country. It employs a total staff of about 600.

The RT Group produces sugar for industry (mainly bulk sugar) and for everyday consumption (icing sugar, brown sugar, etc.), as well as for Belgium, for the EU market and the world market. No single part of the sugar beet is discarded in these processes: all the by-products of sugar production are used and given a second life in different agricultural processes.
